logo01There simply is no better place to hold your next golf tournament than Stonebridge Golf Club. Ideally located in West Valley City, minutes from the Salt Lake International Airport and downtown Salt Lake City, Stonebridge offers 27 holes of wet and wild golf in a links-style layout designed by U.S. Open champion and renowned course designer Johnny Miller.

Named after the rustic red rock bridges that dot the course, Stonebridge features three challenging nines, each measuring nearly 3,600 yards from the tips, making it one of the longest as well as wettest courses in Utah. But if you're not a long hitter, don't worry, there are three other teeing areas for all levels of golfers.

The lakes and creeks are the major hazard, but there's also plenty of sand, with 93 formal bunkers and a 200 yard long waste bunker on one hole. The water and sand, plus the wide fairway landing areas, bent grass greens and lovely native grass plantings combine to give the course a Scottish links feel that makes it truly scenic and a joy to play. "I was excited to design a links style course in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley," Johnny Miller says.

Tip of the Month

Most people know that the key to lowering your golf score is to improve your short game, yet most people continue to practice hitting their driver on the driving range.  Most people have an inflated opinion about the quality of their short game.  I often hear, "my short game is pretty good but I can't hit my long irons or straighten out my driver."  Of course the reality is all parts of our golf game can use some work and there is never enough time in the day to practice all of our weaknesses and still have time to play or say hi to loved ones at home!

That said, if you want to knock two or three strokes off your score sooner than later concentrate on improving your total putts per round.  Our 2011 ladies league featured just two members who averaged fewer than 18 putts per 9 holes and those two were above 17 putts.  If you are 3-putting a couple of times per round those are the easiest strokes to clean up on your scorecard.  The trouble is when most people practice or warm up on the putting green they practice too many mid range putts.  Mid range putts are putts we normally miss and rarely 3-putt.  I like to think of them as waste of time putts!  What you need to practice is long putts and short putts.  Before you start a round practice 40-50 foot putts uphill and downhill for at least ten minutes until you have the feel of the distance going both directions.  Then spend 5 minutes working 3 foot putts around the hole in a circle.  Your scores will improve with this practice routine I guarantee it.

Personally, if I have limited time to warm up and its a choice between hitting balls and putting, I will always choose putting.  You can take fifteen or twenty full practice swings with two clubs to warm up your long game on the first tee if your in a rush and be close to ready but if you don't have a feel for the greens it can take you all day to find it and that's too late!
